Choosing A Motor

Geared Hub vs. Ungeared Hub vs. Chain Drive Motor

After looking at reviews on the Internet, my dad and I learned that a geared hub motor goes into neutral when coasting.  A a non-geared motor does not have neutral but can regenerate power during braking.  Non-geared motors are twice as heavy and twice as big as geared motors.   Motors that drive the chain instead of the wheel are expensive and require significant modifications to the bike. Therefore, we went with a geared hub motor from Calibike.com because the owner explained this motor has high torque for pulling our heavy load up steep hills on our coastal route. We ordered two 29 inch geared motors that would fit on our 29 inch and 700 c wheels (700 c wheels are road bikes; 29 inch wheels are mountain bikes).
